The reason for these judgments is that the blood of saints and prophets was shed. The altar will be the shelter of the martyrs in Revelation (chapter six) and now their cry for revenge is being answered. Everyone who has criticized the Lord for judgment is silenced as a result of the martyrs saying, "Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments" (16:7). The prophet Habakkuk summed it up: "The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him" (2:20). David Jeremiah, Escape the Coming Night
Though we are not able to immediately understand all the details of these dramatic judgments, the unmistakable impression of the Scriptures is that the whole world is being brought to the bar of justice before Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. There is no escape from divine judgment except for those who receive the grace of God in that day by faith in Jesus Christ. The utter perversity and depravity of human nature, which will reject the sovereignty of God in the face of such overwhelming evidence, confirms that even the lake of fire will not produce repentance on the part of those who have hardened their hearts against the grace of God.
